HOMES FOR VETERANS
PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
MEET THE NEW HOMEOWNERS:
Gerard Romero
SUCCESS STORY
Meet: GERARD ROMERO
Gerard, a Navy veteran, worked with a Soldier On Case Manager to find permanent affordable housing.
What was your situation when you reached out to Soldier On?
Gerard and Holly Romeo had challenges finding affordable apartments and housing in New Jersey during the pandemic. At the time, they were being told they had to reach certain income requirements, discouraged due to being on a set fixed income, and lingering debt preventing them to have a better credit score impacting their housing situation.
In January of 2021, with the help of family, and support of Soldier On, the Romeos decided to utilize the Home and Credit Education Program to work on their credit and budgeting. They created an action plan over the next few months to eliminate all their debt. After months of financial consultations, the Romeos were notified in August of their eligibility for a home loan. They were so surprised as they didn't think it was feasible. Their hard work enabled them to raise their credit score and pay off all credit card debt.
"Someone was always listening while working with Soldier On. It was nice to speak to someone who was helping or creating ways for a solution regarding our financial situation and goals," the Romeos said.
With guidance from the program, they applied for their first VA home loan and were immediately approved. The Romeos decided to look at properties in more affordable areas than New Jersey. They located a 4-bedroom/2-bath home in beautiful area of West Virginia, and were able to close in September to become first time homeowners after more than 30 years of renting!
How has your situation improved since working with Soldier On?
We plan to continue to work with the Soldier On. The ideas and suggestions help keep us on track in how we budget, since eliminating all our debt, we are focusing on spending our money where it matters most.
